Mom’s Boyfriend Trying to Understand Why He’s Charged With Death of Toddler Who Found His Gun and Shot Himself

A Michigan toddler found a loaded Glock handgun in the couch and fatally shot himself with it.

Court documents say the 2-year-old’s mother’s now ex-boyfriend, Markus Nevills Jr. admitted to Kentwood Police that he “zoned out” while smoking marijuana and scrolling through his phone and wasn’t paying attention when Kiaire McCoy crawled behind him and found the Glock 22 .40 caliber gun he’d put between the cushion and the armrest, WZZM reported.

Nevills, 22, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, MLive reported, and was arraigned on Monday for the shooting last Friday in Grand Rapids.

Nevills reported said he didn’t understand why he was being charged.

“I’m trying to see how they’re saying this is my fault. I didn’t shoot and kill him,” Nevills said, according to The Associated Press.

Kiaire’s mother, Jikya Reddick, told WZZM that her son “could light up a room.”

“He was a talker,” she said. “Loved his mommy so much.”
