Domestic Dispute Turns into Hostage Situation, Standoff in Georgia

An hours-long hostage situation-turned-standoff in suburban Atlanta ended ended with a man dead and the woman who’d been held against her will safe.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said that a 911 caller told dispatchers at about 3:30 a.m. that he was texting with a resident of the Lithonia home who said he had locked himself in the bathroom and could hear his mother’s boyfriend yelling at his mother. The son believed the boyfriend was going to shoot his mother, the caller said.

DeKalb Police officers arrived on scene and got the son out of the house safely, the GBI said, but the man inside — identified as 36-year-old Jeremy Haugabook — refused to leave the house. Police called a SWAT unit to assist at about 5 a.m.

GBI agents were able to get the woman out of the house as the SWAT team arrived and took over negotiations. Haugabook still refused to come out.

Police obtained arrest and search warrants, and the SWAT team entered the house. According to the GBI, the officers found Haugabook, armed with a handgun, in an upstairs bedroom. He allegedly pointed the weapon at officers, and one of the officers fired.

He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The incident was over by a police press conference at 12:15 p.m., WAGA reported.

The GBI said it was investigating the incident.
