‘Her kids were her everything’: Florida Woman Kills Mother-of-4 Neighbor After Fight Over Children Playing Outside

A Florida woman allegedly shot and killed a mother of four amid a dispute over the victim’s children playing outside, CBS News reports.

Police are investigating the killing but so far have not arrested the shooter because she may be able to assert a self-defense claim under the state’s “stand your ground law.”

According to authorities, on Friday children of 35-year-old Ajike Owens’s children were playing in a field in Ocala when the accused shooter allegedly yelled at the youth and threw skates at them, hitting one of the kids.

Owens then approached the woman, a neighbor whose identity has not been released, about the incident and the two got into an argument. At some point, the neighbor then shot Owens.

“There was a lot of aggressiveness from both of them, back and forth. Whether it be banging on the doors, banging on the walls and threats being made. And then at that moment is when Ms. Owens was shot through the door,” Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said at a news conference on Monday, according to The Associated Press.

Owens, a mother of four, was rushed to a local hospital where she died from her injuries. The victim’s son was reportedly next to her when she was shot.

Woods said the two women had been at odds for years and that police were called to at least six fights between them since January 2021.

“I wish our shooter would have called us instead of taking actions into her own hands,” Woods told reporters, according to the AP. “I wish Ms. Owens would have called us in the hopes we could have never gotten to the point at which we are here today.”

Law enforcement and prosecutors are now reviewing whether the shooter can legitimately make a self-defense claim for the fatal shooting.

Attorney Benjamin Crump, who represents Owens’ family, said the shooter uttered racial slurs at the kids before Owens went to the woman’s apartment.

Owens’ mother, Pamela Dias, disputes that the shooter has a viable self-defense claim and is calling on authorities to hold the neighbor accountable. Dias said her daughter was a single mother who cherished her children.

“She loved them with all her being. To know her is to know that her kids were her everything,” Dias said, according to WESH-TV. “My baby was so full of life.”
