Mother, Boyfriend Charged After Remains Found in Hunt for Missing 4-Year-Old Girl

Investigators looking for a missing 4-year-old girl have found the remains of a small juvenile not far from the girl’s home, and the girl’s mother and her boyfriend have been charged in connection with the disappearance.

Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis said in a tweet that the remains believed to be those of Sequoia Samuels were found late Thursday night after hours of searching but have not yet been positively identified.

Brittany Jackson, Sequoia’s mother — who reported her missing at about 6:30 Thursday morning — has been charged with aggravated child neglect, abuse of a corpse, and false offense report, Davis said. Jackson’s boyfriend, Jaylon Hobson, has also been charged with false offense report.

“We are beyond heartbroken this morning and are praying for strength for everyone involved as we investigate this tragic loss,” the chief said.

Earlier, police said Sequoia was seen on a neighbor’s surveillance camera at about 3 a.m. walking alone in the Uptown neighborhood of Memphis. The girl had medical issues and a feeding tube, investigators said.

Police announced the discovery of the remains early Friday morning, saying they’d been found just before midnight and that two people had been detained, WREG reported.

Police are still investigating.
