Toddler Finds Loaded Hangun, Fatally Shoots Pregnant Mom

A pregnant Ohio mom was fatally shot last week by her toddler son who found a loaded handgun and shot her in the back.

Norwalk Police Chief David Smith said that Laura Ilg, 31, called police shortly after 1 p.m. on Friday to report what happened, the Norwalk Reflector said.

Police arrived and had to kick in a locked upstairs bedroom door to get to the mom and 2-year-old. The found Ilg conscious but in great pain.

She was taken to Fisher-Titus Medical Center and died shortly after 5 p.m. Police did not say how far along she was in her pregnancy, but the fetus also did not survive.

Before her death, Ilg told investigators that the family had safety measures in place, but she didn’t know the boy had picked it up while she was doing laundry.

Smith told WOIO that investigators believe the gun was left in the nightstand and that the toddler didn’t usually have access to the room.

The child is with his father, who said the gun was his, Smith said.

Ilg’s husband, Alek Ilg, posted on Facebook Monday evening, saying “Laura and our unborn son Talisen passed away Friday.”

“There are no words for the pain and loss I feel,” he wrote. “She was, is, and will always be, the love of my life.”
