On Thursday, human remains were reportedly discovered in a floating barrel at a South Carolina lake.
In a statement issued to the Charlotte Observer, Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said the remains were located at Lake Thicketty in the Macedonia Community near Gaffney. Deputies reportedly discovered the remains after opening the barrel, which was located near a boat ramp on shore.
Reports indicated that the barrel was found floating in the lake.
“It appears the body had been in the container for a number of days,” Fowler commented.
Officials have not disclosed what exactly led to deputies finding the barrel on Thursday. However, sheriff Steve Mueller said detectives were at Lake Thicketty amid an investigation involving other state and county agencies, according to WYFF.
An autopsy which will determine the decedent’s identity and cause of death is pending. According to WHNS, police are investigating multiple leads in this case.
