A woman was killed during an early morning hit-and-run crash in Pennsylvania on Thursday, in an area reportedly known for fast driving and ignoring traffic signs.
It happened at around 3:30 a.m., at the intersection of North Broad and Somerset Streets in North Philadelphia. CBS News identified the woman as 35-year-old Tamarah Savage.
The vehicle involved was traveling in the northbound lanes of North Broad Street as Savage crossed by foot at Somerset.
“She was hit with such force that she was launched, knocked out of one of her sneakers,” Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.
Neighbor Linda Felder told ABC 6 that there have been numerous issues around the area, including car racing and drivers ignoring traffic lights.
“Traffic is horrible around here. You hear cars racing up and down all day, all night. This is a bad intersection for a lot of people,” Felder said. “You have to pay attention to the cars, not the lights, because people when they drive, they ignore the lights.”
Investigators suspect that a section of the undercarriage of the fleeing vehicle became detached during the incident. They’re now working to determine the specific make and model of the vehicle involved, described as a white sedan, potentially a Toyota.
“I was up on the third floor when I heard that, watching a movie. It was loud, then I looked out the window everybody was screaming,” resident Justin Reyes told ABC 6 “I never saw the car. He was gone within seconds of it happening.”
Reyes added that the victim was frequently seen “hanging out” in the area and walking up and down the street.
Meanwhile, anyone with information is urged to contact police at 215-686-TIPS.
