10-Year-Old Boy Tells Police He Played Dead When Mom Tried to Drown Him in Bathtub

An Alabama mother was arrested last week after she allegedly tried to drown her 10-year-old son in the bathtub, bit and hit him, threw bleach on him, and locked him in a closet.

Ashley Elizabeth Jones was released on bond a day after her arrest on Monday, which came a day after she told police she was on her way to be interviewed but never showed up, WAAY reported

The boy told investigators that Jones threw bleach on him when he said he wanted to live with his father. When he went to wash off the bleach, Jones came in and held his face under water. The boy said he played dead to get her to stop, but then she locked him in a closet for what he believed to be several hours.

Court documents say the boy showed the investigators scrapes and bruises on his body that he said came from his mother.

According to PEOPLE, the boy called his father on April 21 and asked him to pick him up. The boy ran out when he arrived, and objected when his father said he needed to talk to his mother about the unscheduled pick up. That’s when the child told his father about the abuse, and he called police.

The affidavit did not say when the bathtub incident took place, but the child alleged incidences of abuse between April 15 and April 21.

Investigators asked Jones to come in to the police station to talk about the boy’s allegations, but she didn’t show up after telling them she was on the way, WAAY said. Police issued a “be on the lookout” for her vehicle and she was eventually arrested on Monday.

She denied the allegations, although she has not entered a plea and posted bond on Tuesday.

Charged with aggravated child abuse, she’s due back in court again on May 20, PEOPLE reported.

It’s not clear where the boy is now.
