9 Shot as Gunman Opens Fire in Cleveland Entertainment District

A gunman opened fire on crowds of people leaving nightclubs in Cleveland’s Warehouse District early Sunday morning, wounding nine people, one of them seriously.

Cleveland Police Chief Wayne Drummond said multiple officers were on the the scene as part of a regular detail when the gunfire erupted and responded “immediately,” WOIO reported.

Investigators said the shooting started just before 2:30 a.m. and the victims were seven men and two women, ranging in age from 23 to 38. One person, a man, was listed in serious condition overnight while the other eight were said not to have life-threatening injuries.

Drummond said investigators were following “some leads” to identify and arrest the suspect.

The chief joined Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb at a news conference Sunday, with both calling for sane gun control measures in the city and state.

“It’s not a matter of police response,” Drummond pointed out. “It’s not a matter of police visibility.”

The shooting “truly shows the massive gun problem we have, not just in Cleveland, not just in Ohio, but across this nation,” Bibb said, noting that gun violence has increased in Ohio since the state enacted a law allowing people to carry a concealed weapon without a license, background check, or training requirements.

Bibb said the law ties the hands of cities and their mayors trying to “get guns off our streets” and that lawmakers must “give us more tools.”

“I am sick and tired of getting these calls late at night. I am sick and tired of hearing from our residents and victims of gun violence,” he said, adding that laws like permitless carry “make it harder” for local government to combat crime.
