Tennessee Surgeon Shot Dead by Patient Who’d Reportedly Been Threatening Him for a Week

A patient brought a gun into an exam room at a West Tennessee orthopedics clinic on Tuesday and shot a beloved surgeon to death.

Campbell Clinic identified the doctor as Benjamin Mauck, an elbow, hand, and wrist specialist who had been at the clinic since 2012, the Memphis Commercial Appeal said. The clinic said it was “shocked and heartbroken” and that all its locations would be closed until further notice.

Collierville Police have not released the identity of the suspect, who was captured outside the clinic entrance without incident within five minutes of the shooting.

Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane said at a news conference the suspect had been at the clinic for several hours before the shooting but did not say what he was doing there during that time. Multiple employees and other patients were inside the clinic when the shooting took place at about 2:30 p.m., but there were no other victims.

“This appears to have been a one-on-one encounter that happened in the exam room,” Lane said.

The chief said the suspect “had a gun on his person” when he was taken into custody, but the gun was not in his hand, WHBQ reported.

A witness on the scene told WREG that the suspect had been threatening Mauck for a week, but Lane said he had no knowledge of the threats when asked about them at the news conference.

He said detectives have not determined a motive, but the investigation is still in its earliest stages.
