‘Worn Out’ Murder Suspect Recaptured 9 Days After Jail Escape

A murder suspect who escaped a Pennsylvania jail nine days ago has been captured, still in the same northwestern Pennsylvania area.

Michael Burham escaped from the Warren County Jail by “elevating himself” atop exercise equipment in the jail’s recreation yard and then going through a metal-grated roof, as CrimeOnline previously reported. He lowered himself to the ground using tied-together bedsheets and fled into the woods on foot.

Police told WIVB that they got a tip just before 4 p.m. Saturday about a suspicious person in Conewango Township. a neighbor reportedly spotted Burham when the dog was barking at him in the backyard.

Police surrounded the area and took Burham into custody just before 6 p.m. after a brief pursuit.

Police said he had nothing in his possession, but they’ll be searching the area where he was found. He was not armed, although police have found bags in the area containing ammunition.

He’s being held in the custody of Pennsylvania State Police.

State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens described Burham as “worn out,” noting that he was dirty and wet when he was captured. He’d changed shirts and some point, but was wearing his jail-issued pants inside-out.

Burham is the prime suspect in the rape and shooting death of 34-year-old Kala Hodgkin in her Jamestown, New York, home on May 11 and is also accused of setting fire to another woman’s car that same day.

Burham allegedly remained in the area for more than a week after Hodgkin’s murder, then reportedly kidnapped an elderly Warren County couple from their home in Sheffield at gunpoint and drove them to South Carolina in their car. The couple was later found safe, but Burham avoided capture for days hiding in the woods.

He was in jail on charges related to the kidnapping but has not yet been charged in connection with the murder.
