Mom in Critical Condition After 16-Year-Old Son Stabs Her 13 Times to Kill ‘Demon’ Inside

An Indiana teenager accused of stabbing his mother Friday morning told police he did it to kill the demon in her.

The 16-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery, and two counts of battery. He’s also charged with two counts of torturing an animal for alleged stabbing two dogs, according to WBND.

A St. Joseph County jail spokesperson said the boy has been charged as an adult, police said. He was identified as Caden Rutledge, WSBT reported.

The mother is in critical but stable condition, according to WNDU. Veterinarians treating the dogs said one of them underwent emergency surgery and has a 50/50 chance of survival. The other dog is recovering.

Mishawaka Police said they were called at about 5:30 a.m. and that the dispatcher heard the victim repeatedly calling out, “Don’t kill me,” WSBT said. The mother told police that her son attacked her and took her cell phone to keep her from calling police, but she grabbed his phone and made the call as she escaped to a neighbor’s home, where police found her.

Officials said she was stabbed 13 times and suffered from a collapsed lung.

The mother told police she called her sister to the house at about 1 a.m. because of Rutledge’s behavior. The sister said he called her a demon when she arrived, but she prayed with him until he calmed down and left at about 5 a.m.

The boy told officers who took him into custody that he stabbed the dogs and his mother because “he had been manipulated by Satan,” according to police reports. He said he believed stabbing his mother was the right thing to do to kill the demon inside her.

Jail officials told WNDU that Rutledge injured two corrections officers after he was booked into the jail Friday evening. They are receiving medical treatment and expected to be okay.

The teen is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday.
