14-Year-Old Boy Weighed 40 Pounds When He Died With Mom & Aunt at Off-Grid Campsite

A 14-year-old boy found dead at a Colorado campsite last with his mother and aunt month weighed 40 pounds, according to an autopsy report released on Wednesday.

Sisters Rebecca Vance, 42, Christine Vance, 41, and Rebecca Vance’s teen son were found deceased at a remote campsite in Gunnison County on July 9 and 10. All three bodies were badly decomposed, and coroners determined they died of hypothermia and malnutrition, according to The Colorado Sun.

The boy, who officials have not publicly named, was found dead outside a tent. The hiker who discovered him then unzipped the tent and discovered Rebecca and Christine Vance’s bodies, the news outlet reported.

Family members previously told the media that the three ventured out to the remote campsite last August. They reportedly did not tell relatives where they were going as they planned to live off the grid. The trio — who vanished in October — reportedly did not have any survival experience.

In July, Gunnison County coroner Michael Barnes told The Colorado Sun that the bodies were partially mummified, and he suspects the trio died from malnutrition or exposure to the elements during this past winter.

Survival guides and empty food tins were reportedly found near the Vances’ bodies.
