2 More Sightings of Escaped Pennsylvania Murderer, Who’s Still at Large

Police reported two more confirmed sightings of escaped murderer Danelo Cavalcante in Pennsylvania, bringing to nearly a dozen glimpses of the fugitive sine his August 31 escape from Chester County Prison.

Cavalcante was sentenced to life in prison for the 2021 murder of his ex-girlfriend, Deborah Brandao, and was awaiting transfer to a state prison when he crab-walked up a wall, pushed through razor wire, ran across the roof, and jumped to freedom, as CrimeOnline previously reported. He’s been on the run since, despite all the sightings, all in a relatively small area not far from the prison he fled.

Police announced the two additional sightings on Saturday but didn’t provide any details about them other than to say they took place on Friday in the search area around the Longwood Gardens botanical garden in East Marlborough Township, according to the Associated Press. Cavalcante has been spotted multiple times in and near the garden, which is now closed because of the search.

The gardens sprawl over nearly 200 acres, with paths, an outdoor theatre, ponds, fountains, meadows, treehouses, and even a restaurant.

Officials say Cavalcante killed Brandao because he was afraid she was going to tell police that he was wanted for another murder in his native Brazil. Prosecutors in Brazil’s Tocantins state say that Cavalcante killed Válter Júnior Moreira dos Reis in 2017 because of a debt the victim owed him.

On Friday, officials announced they had fired the prison guard who was stationed in an observation tower at the time of Cavalcante’s escape. The guard, a corrections officer for 18 years, had his personal cellphone with him at the time, which is a violation of jail protocol, according to Chester County spokesperson Michelle Bjork.

The reward for information leading to Cavalcante’s capture has now reached $20,000.
