High School Junior Shot Dead at Louisiana School; Cops Say Bullying Involved

A 14-year-old student at a Louisiana high school in a deadly school shooting this week that left a student athlete dead and two others wounded.

The suspect, who is not being identified, has been charged with second degree murder, aggravated second degree battery, illegal possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm in a gun free zone, WAFB reported.

The victim was identified as Vernon Gordon Jr., and 11th grade student at St. Helena College and Career Academy in Greensburg. Jordan played on the school football team, where his father, Vernon Gordon Sr., is an assistant coach. His uncle, Christopher Gordon, is the school principal and head football coach.

“The motive appears to have been from bullying, and the investigation of course is still ongoing,” said Chief Deputy Joe Cheney of the St. Helena Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Cheney did not provide further details about the alleged bullying. He also did not say where the gun used in the shooting came from.

The incident took place in a back parking lot at the end of the school day on Tuesday as students were heading home or to practices.

One of the wounded students was taken to a hospital by ambulance; the other was airlifted. Both are expected to survive.

St. Helena Parish School District Superintendent Dr. Kelli Joseph said that the school will remain closed this week and reopen on Tuesday.
