Alabama Ex-Con, Accused of Killing Pregnant Ex-Girlfriend, Commits Suicide in Jail

Bradley Stokes previously served 14 years for the 2008 murder of his then-girlfriend, Crystal Bailey.

An ex-con who served 14 years in prison for the death of his girlfriend in 2008 reportedly committed suicide in his jail cell while awaiting trial for killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend earlier this month.

A coroner said 39-year-old Bradley Stokes was pronounced dead just before 2 a.m. at the Russell County, Alabama, jail, where he was being held after being charged with two counts of capital murder in the death of Treasure Hennessey, 37, on September 1, Chattahoochee News and Weather reported.

The Russell County Sheriff’s Office said that corrections officers found Stokes “unresponsive” just after 1:30 a.m. They called for an ambulance and began life-saving measures but were unsuccessful.

No further information was released.

Hennessey had moved out of the home she shared with Stokes in August and was “given permission” to stay at a Russell County fire station as a safe house, as CrimeOnline previously reported. Investigators said Stokes found out where she was and went there on September 1 to wait for her.

He stabbed her multiple times, hid her vehicle behind a barn, and fled to Columbus, Georgia — where he was arrested the next day — in his own car. Georgia authorities arrested him for fleeing and eluding, and he was extradited back to Alabama on September 6 to face murder charges.

Investigators said he feared that Hennessey was going to file domestic violence charges against him, which would send him back to prison on a parole violation. Hennessey had, in fact, filed two reports of domestic violence against him, leading to her moving into the safe house. It’s not clear why he wasn’t arrested.

Stokes was released from prison on June 2 after serving 14 years of a 16-year sentence for the death of his then-girlfriend, Crystal Bailey. He and Hennessey began dating shortly after his release.
