Woman Critically Wounds Niece While Trying to Stab Dog That Ate Her Sandwich

An Indiana woman has been charged with stabbing her 1-year-old niece while trying to stab her dog because it ate her chicken sandwich.

Sharon Key, 32, charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury and two counts of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, Law&Crime reported.

The little girl was rushed to the hospital, where she was initially reported in critical condition and received stitches to the neck and ear. She was later upgraded to serious but stable condition, WITN said.

The incident took place at an Indianapolis Days Inn just before 11 p.m. on Tuesday. The family — Key, her sister, and her niece — went to Burger King for food and came back to the hotel room. Key told investigators that her dog ate her chicken sandwich and she got angry, chasing the dog around the room with her knife.

The dog jumped onto the bed beside her niece, and Key said she “accidentally” stabbed the little girl while trying to kill her dog.

When police arrived, they found Key hiding behind a bush outside.

According to court documents, the girl’s mother told investigators that Key came to the hotel room at about 10 a.m. that morning and drank alcohol for “most of the day,” Law&Crime said. She said the stabbing happened after she went into the bathroom to give her son a bath.

A few minutes later, she said she heard “loud noises from the bedroom so she walked out and saw that [Key] was holding a knife in her hand and [her daughter] was bloody and screaming on the bed.” Key immediately told her it was an “accident.”

While she was tending to the injuring and calling 911, the mother said she saw Key leave the room.
