Volunteer Firefighter Charged With Setting Fires, Responding to Help Put Them Out

An Iowa firefighter has been arrested and charged with setting a string of fires that he then responded to with his unit to help put out.

Kendall Eugene Rhoads, 60, has been charged with 13 counts of arson and one count of reckless use of fire or explosives, the grundy County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies began an investigation in April of a series of fires, mostly ditch fires. Some spread into nearby corn fields, the department said, and others “included buildings on abandoned properties.”

The sheriff’s office said Rhoads was a volunteer firefighter with the Holland Fire Department for the past six years.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation is still ongoing and asked the public to contact them with any further information.
