Online Vigilante Who Baited Suspected Predators Shot Dead After Accusing Teen of Being a Pedophile

A Michigan man who had a sizeable online following for exposing suspected sexual predators was fatally shot on Friday during a confrontation with two teens.

The Detroit Free Press reported that Robert Wayne Lee, 40, who went by Boopac Shakur, confronted a 17- and 18-year-old male at a Pontiac restaurant and accused one of them of being a pedophile. Lee allegedly then punched one of the teens, who responded by brandishing a knife while the other pulled out a gun and shot Lee several times.

The teens reportedly fled the restaurant but they were apprehended. Lee was pronounced dead at a hospital.

“There were two people at the table, one he was mostly focused on and talking to and became heated with was not the individual who shot him – it was the other person on the opposite side of the table,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said, according to WJBK.

The Detroit Free Press reported that the gunman was the 17-year-old boy who was involved in the altercation with Lee.

Lee, who was affiliated with Dads Against Predators, posed online as a 15-year-old girl to expose suspected offenders on Facebook and Instagram. Police said his vigilante sting operations resulted in criminal charges against several men — but they also led to a false accusation.

Officials have not publicly named the two suspects. Prosecutors are expected to decide on Monday whether criminal charges will be filed in this case.
