Former Alabama Teacher Arrested in Florida on Sex Abuse Charges

A former teacher has been arrested in Florida on an Alabama fugitive warrant and is awaiting extradition to face charges of sexual abuse.

The Helena Police Department said that a victim reported the absue in December 2022, and Richard Bailey Granger was named the suspect.

By that time, Granger, who resigned his post at the Helena Middle School in July 2021, had moved to Florida, where he was employed by Bay District Schools for the 2022-2023 school year, WBRC reported. He resigned at the end of that school year, the district said.

Helena police said the allegations against Granger were not connected with his time at the middle school.

A grand jury in Shelby County, Alabama, indicted Granger on two counts of sodomy and seven counts of sexual abuse. He was arrested on October 2 and is waiting for deputies to bring him back to Alabama.

No further information was released.
