California Couple Charged with Murder, Torture After Toddler Dies in Bathtub

A California couple have been charged with murder and child abuse after their toddler drowned in a bathtub earlier this week.

Contra Costa County sheriff’s deputies and medics were called to the couple’s home in Rodeo Monday night, KPIX reported. Medics performed life-saving measures on the 2-year-old child and rushed them to the hospital, but it was too late.

Detectives, however, determined that the child died from injuries suffered during “prolonged abuse” rather than drowning. A second child in the couple’s care was also found to be suffering life-threatening injuries.

Destiny Rose Deboe, 22, and Tyshawn Haywood, 21, have been charged with murder, child abuse resulting in death, torture in the death of a toddler, and abuse of an infant.

“The loss of a young life deeply impacts us all,” District Attorney Diana Becton said in a statement. “Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the family and loved ones of the victim during this incredibly difficult time. We are committed to seeking justice and holding those responsible accountable for their actions.”

Haywood is being held on a $3.1 million bond, according to court records, which say Deboe’s bond is not available.
