A California mother and her boyfriend have been chargedin the death of her 1-year-old son was found unresponsive and with severe burns on Sunday.

Sergio Mena, 32, and Samantha Garver, 33, were charged on Wednesday with murder and child abuse that detectives say occurred over the past several months, KABC reports. Additionally, Mena has been charged with assault on a child causing death.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office said it found Henry Wheatley Brown “suffering severe burns to his body” when they responded to the home Sunday night. The boy was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives said that doctors found other injuries on the boy that indicated child abuse.

Garver was charged with misdemeanor child abuse previously, in 2013, and pleaded guilty, KABC said.

It’s not clear if authorities had been alerted to any previous abuse issues involving the 1-year-old. Police have not said what may have caused the boy to stop breathing or how he came to be severely burned.
