MASS SHOOTING AT PENNSYLVANIA COMMUNITY CENTER

A mass shooting early Sunday at a Pennsylvania community center has left at least one person dead and seven others wounded, WPXI-TV reports.

Gunfire erupted at the Chevy Chase Community Center in White Township around 12:35 a.m., according to the Pennsylvania State Police.

Officers who first arrived at the scene encountered people running away from the facility.

Victims were rushed to Indiana Regional Medical Center and UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, according to the Associated Press. Two victims are in serious condition, and investigators believe there may be more injured.

Authorities have not released the names and ages of those wounded or the person who died. It also is not known publicly how many shooters opened fire or what might have motivated the shooting.

“At this time, the incident is under active investigation and no suspects are in custody,” Pennsylvania State Police said, according to CNN.

The community center is near the city of Indiana, Pennsylvania, about 60 miles east of Pittsburgh. The city is home to Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

College-aged students were said to be holding a private party inside the community center at the time of the shooting. The event occurred during homecoming week at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, although the gathering was not formally sanctioned by the school.

Indiana University of Pennsylvania asked students to find a secure location and stay there, but the school did not lockdown the campus, according to WTAE-TV.
