Florida Woman Confesses to Killing Romantic Rival in Ambush Outside Library

A 64-year-old Florida woman has confessed to gunning down another woman she viewed as a romantic rival on Wednesday as the victim begged for her life.

A witness told police she saw Joyce Ann Small pull out a handgun and shoot the victim until she fell to the ground, then stood over her and shot her in the head, WPLG reported.

Small initially refused to talk with detectives but later told them the victim was a homeless woman she had helped named “Sarai.” She said she welcomed Sarai into her home but then began to believe the woman was “involved” with her boyfriend, according to a Miami Gardens Police Department report.

Small told investigators she followed her boyfriend but found no evidence of the affair, although she insisted she knew it was going on.

The boyfriend, she said, was married to someone else.

Small said that Sarai purposefully agitated her just before she shot her outside the North Dade Regional Library at about 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The library’s surveillance cameras, however, filmed Small coming out of the bushes and ambushing Sarai, the arrest report said.

Police found Small’s .40 caliber Smith and Wesson near a walking trail northeast of the library, and Small herself walking northbound on Northwest 24 Avenue.

She’s been charged with first degree murder.
