A 6-year-old Georgia boy is dead after he was found stabbed multiple times inside a burning apartment.

Gwinnett County police and firefighters were called to an apartment fire in Peachtree Corners shortly before 8 a.m. on Thursday, police said. Firefighters made entry into the first floor unit, where the fire was centered, and found the boy. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The boy was the only occupant in the apartment.

Officers began an investigation and found a woman behind the building and took her into custody. She was wearing wet clothing, no shoes, and one sock. Police said they believe she lived in the apartment where the boy was found.

The child’s name is being withheld pending next-of-kin notifications.

According to WAGA, police said the woman was “likely” related to the boy, but they did not explain how. They described the woman as a “person of interest.”
