Passenger Grabs Steering Wheel, Causes Crash That Kills Texas Toddler

A 3-year-old child was killed overnight in Houston when an argument between the driver of an SUV and her possibly drunk passenger ended in a rollover crash.

According to KTRK, police said the crash happened just before midnight on State Highway 288. Five other children, including a 7-year-old and a 3-month old — were also in the Chevy Tahoe at the time. Police did not provide the ages of the other children.

Investigators say the man in the passenger seat grabbed the steering wheel while the adults were arguing, causing the SUV to roll over and slam into a concrete barrier. Both adults and all six children were taken to the hospital, where the 3-year-old was pronounced dead.

“Sadly, the 3-year-old was pronounced deceased at the hospital, and at this time, we are conducting a scene investigation on exactly what all occurred as far as any speeds’ relation,” Cmdr. Michael Chaney said. “Our DWI unit is doing a follow up on intoxication, if that is an issue.”

No charges have been filed as yet. The highway, which was closed for hours for the investigation, has since reopened.
