‘Honor their legacy’: Vigil Planned to Remember University of Idaho Murder Victims

University of Idaho students and community members will gather later this month to remember the victims of last year’s quadruple homicide, KREM-TV reports.

A vigil to honor the four victims has been scheduled for Monday, November 13, at 6 p.m. on the university’s campus in Moscow. The event will be open to the public.

“It is important that the students lead this effort toward healing,” student government leader Tanner McLain said in a statement. “We want to ensure we continue to tell their stories, to honor their legacy and to provide a place where each student can heal. Together we are moving forward.”

Representatives of different Greek chapters will lead the vigil and four students will speak about each of the victims, who were involved in the school’s Greek life.

The vigil comes exactly one year after Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin were found stabbed to death at an off-campus house on Sunday, November 13, 2022.

Prosecutors allege that 28-year-old Bryan Kohberger committed the murders. He faces four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary.

At the time of the slayings, Kohberger was a criminology Ph.D. student at the nearby Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. DNA links Kohberger to a knife sheath found at the crime scene, but his lawyers contend he was not at the house and was instead driving around alone on the night of the slayings.

A judge in late May entered a plea of not guilty on Kohberger’s behalf. His trial was expected to start last month but has been delayed indefinitely after he waived his right to a speedy trial.

Latah County Prosecuting Attorney Bill Thompson in late June said his office planned to seek the death penalty if Kohberger is convicted.
