Update: 4 Shot in Shootout on Alabama Highway

A group of people decided to chase down what they believed was their stolen vehicle, leading to the rush hour interstate shoot-out.

At least four people were shot Friday when two groups of people began shooting at each other on an Alabama freeway at rush hour.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Lt. Catina Williams said medics transported two males to the University of Alabama-Birmingham Hospital with life-threatening injuries, AL.com reported.

At least two more gunshot victims were dropped at the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Calls began coming in at about 4:40 p.m. Friday afternoon, reporting gunfire on southbound Interstate 59 near the 120 mile marker. One call reported a person on the ground near a vehicle, and a second victim was found nearby.

Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the initial investigation indicates that a group of people saw what they believed to be their vehicle, which had been stolen from another city. They began to follow the supposedly stolen car.

“The groups stopped and a shootout ensued,’’ said Fitzgerald, who said that a woman is in custody.

“Everyone shot at UAB Hospital is a suspect at this point,’’ he said. “Every person who was shot had some involvement in the initial incident.”

Police shut down traffic on the busy highway as they began their investigation. Two hours into probe, a crash on the northbound lanes next to the shooting scene further snarled traffic.
