Update: 3 Dead on University of Nevada-Las Vegas Campus; Shooter Also Dead

At least three people were killed on the campus of the University of Nevada at Las Vegas around noon on Wednesday when a gunman opened fire on campus.

Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill said that one other victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition but had been upgraded to stable condition.

McMahill also said that the gunman was dead and there is “no more threat to the community,” but provided no further information about that, LVMPD said on social media.

“Right now, we know there are 3 victims, but unknown extent of the injuries. That number could change, ” McMahill said.

The university reported the incident shortly before noon on Twitter.com in post that said campus police were responded to a report of shots fired at Beam Hall, home of the Lee Business School, urging students to “evacuate to a safe area.” A few minutes later, the unversity confirmed an “active shooter situation.”

Las Vegas police posted that they were responded about five minutes later, as CrimeOnline reported. “There appears to be multiple victims at this time,” police said.

Fifteen minutes after that post, police said there were reports of gunfire at the student union, urging students to “evacuate the area.”

The suspect was confirmed dead at about 12:30 p.m., but the university told students to remain sheltering in place at 1 p.m., saying the “police are evacuating buildings one at a time.”

UNLV and other higher education systems in southern Nevada closed for the remainder of the day. Authorities are expected to provide more information at a press conference later Wednesday afternoon,.
