A 12-year-old Missouri boy shot his mother’s boyfriend in the head early Tuesday morning while the couple was arguing.

St. Louis County police said the boy grabbed a shotgun, walked into the room where his mother and the man were arguing, and shot him. He fled the home after the shooting, KSDK reported.

The man was said to be semi-conscious and breathing when he was taken to an area hospital, KMOV reported, and was later said to have “stable” vital signs.

KSDK said the boy turned himself in to police later in the company of his mother. According St. Louis courts spokesperson Joel Currier, the boy has been charged with first degree assault, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said. The man is expected to survive.

Police have released no other information.
