Ex-Boyfriend Guns Down Florida Woman, Her Mother in Miami Condo

A Florida man forced his way into the condominium his ex-girlfriend and her mother shared, shooting both women to death.

Miami police said the shooting took place just after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Yolanda Villas Condominium in the Flagami area of the city. Investiators said they found Isbelsy Olivera, 22, and her 50-year-old mother, Irisbel Cartalla, dead inside a unit in the building.

The suspect “somehow” got into the building and ambushed the women, Miami Police spokesperson Kiara Delva told WTVJ.

About 20 minutes after the shooting, the suspect — identified as 48-year-old Carlos Travieso — turned himself into officers at the West Miami Police Department and said he had just “assassinated” two people,” according to an arrest report.

The report says that security footage from the building showed Travieso walking around the area 30 minutes before the shooting, then waiting for Cartalla to open the door for a witness. The video showed him “immediately following the witness into the apartment as he retrived an apparently firearm he was previously concealing.”

The witness said they saw Travieso shoot Cartalla at least once, according to the report.

According to the report, security footage from the building showed Travieso walking around the area about 30 minutes before the shooting.

Travieso was charged with two counts of first degree murder and ordered held without bond at a hearing on Thursday.

Both mother and daughter were set to celebrate birthdays in the coming week, Cartalla on Saturday and Olivera next Thursday. Friends said that Cartalla provided cleaning services in the condominiums and her daughter did nails in their unit.

Delva said investigators are still working to determine how Travieso got into the building past a security guard.

“The investigation is ongoing, there’s still a lot of moving components, circumstances surrounding what led up to the shooting is under investigation,” Delva said. “The circumstances surrounding what led up to the suspect being able to gain access to the apartment complex is still under investigation as well, so there are still a lot of moving components to this investigation as far as how he gained access into the building.”
