NY Cops Kill Man Who Was Holding His Mother at Knifepoint

New York police shot and killed a man who was allegedly holding his mother at knifepoint in their Bronx apartment Saturday morning.

The 30-year-old man, who has not yet been publicly identified, reportedly told his family he was going to kill them and then himself.

A 19-year-old family member made the 911 call that brought police to the scene, WCBS reported. The teen ran out of the apartment screaming, with a cut on his face, when police arrived.

The two responding officers found the man in the kitchen, holding his 45-year-old mother in a headlock with a large kitchen knife to her throat. The officers said the woman was bleeding from the head.

NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell told reporters that the officers ordered the man to drop the knife, but he did not comply. One of the officers fired, striking the man in the head.

The officers rendered aid to the man and his mother until medics arrived and took them both to the hospital, where the son died.

“You know, every day in the city, our cops respond to calls to emotionally disturbed people,” Chell said. “It’s a tough job for our cops to handle these. And they always look for the best outcome for the family and for the emotionally disturbed person. Today was a complete tragedy during this holiday season. Thank God our cops got here quickly and saved this family from further harm.”
