GRAPHIC: Severed Head Found in Woman’s Freezer During Welfare Check

An investigation is underway after a man’s dismembered remains were reportedly discovered in a New York City apartment on Monday.

Police were performing a welfare check at the Brooklyn residence when they allegedly found multiple unidentified remains. Though it is unclear how the man died, the New York Daily News reported that his remains were stored in a refrigerator.

Meanwhile, sources reportedly told the Daily Mail that Heather Stines, 45, lived in the home and was detained after the grisly discovery was made. The sources also claimed the remains — which included a severed head — were in a freezer at the residence.

Stines’ aunt told the tabloid that Stines and her husband lived in the Brooklyn apartment. However, Stines’ husband’s relatives said he has been jailed in Virginia since September after he tried to cash a fraudulent check.

His sister-in-law alleged the couple are drug users who have been arrested multiple times. She claimed Stines relapsed about a year ago after she learned her daughter died of a drug overdose. Additionally, Stines’ aunt claimed Stines has had several of her children taken away from her.

“The worst I know of is she lost her children because somebody reported them sleeping on the floor because she didn’t have any beds,” the aunt said. “She said she threw the beds away because of bed bugs. They slept on palettes.”

A tenant who lives across the hall from Stines revealed to the Daily Mail that people tried to break into her apartment at least twice to take money she owed for drugs.

It is unclear whether Stines has been formally charged. Reports indicated that the deceased man has not been identified.
