A California man was found dead in his car in Nevada late Wedneday after he allegedly opened fire on a passing pickup truck and later chased it down to fire at it again.

The Elko County Sheriff’s Office said the incident took place on US 93 outside Wells. The driver of the GMC pickup truck said they were traveling southbound when the driver of Dodge Challenger traveling northbound opened fire then turned around and began following the truck.

The truck driver said they lost sight of the Challenger as they approached Wells, but south of the town the Challenger again approached and pulled up alongside the truck. The driver fired again, and the trucker driver braked. The Challenger continued southbound while the truck driver returned to Wells to meet with law enforcement at a truck stop.

The truck driver was not injured.

Shortly after 12:30 a.m. Thursday morning, a 911 call reported a Dodge Challenger stopped in the travel lane of the highway about 30 miles south of Wells. State troopers and deputies arrived on the scene and found the car facing south in the northbound lane. The found driver dead in the driver’s seat with a rifle and handgun in his lap but said he “did not die of a gunshot wound,” although it was clear that several shots had been fired from inside the vehicle “including through the windshield.”

The officers also found about 40 grams of fentanyl and 16 grams of methamphetamine near the driver.

The sheriff’s office said the body has been sent to the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office for cause of death and confirmation of his identity. They said that while he appeared to be from California, his car had Alaska license plates.
