A North Carolina toddler is dead after he found a loaded, unsecured gun and shot himself.

Greenville police said the incident took place around 10 p.m. on Friday, WXII reported.

The child was rushed to Eastern Carolina University Health Medical Center but did not survive.

Police said no charges would be filed because “the adults in the home are believed to have taken precautions to keep the weapons out of reach.”

They did not explain how the toddler got his hands on the gun if it was properly stored.
