Cops Arrest Mother of Fugitive Murder Suspect, Charged With Shooting 12-Year-Old Boy

Police in Texas have charged the mother of a man wanted for the murder of his ex-girlfriend’s 12-year-old son with hindering apprehension or prosecution.

Terry Bryan Rivera, 27, is on the run after he allegedly opened fire through a bedroom window at his former girlfriend’s apartment on Monday, striking and killing Carlos Fernandez, KTRK reports. The boy’s mother, two younger sisters, and a man were inside the apartment but were not harmed.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday they had arrested Rivera’s mother, 51-year-old Alva Cornejo.

Deputies were called to the home before the shooting, KRIV reported. Rivera reportedly dropped the children off at their mother’s apartment at around 10 p.m. on Monday but was loud and confrontational. The sheriff’s office said that Rivera reportedly shoved her when she came outside with friends to get the children out of his truck.

Rivera reportedly grabbed a firearm and yelled at the children’s mother as the children were taken inside. He did not, at that time, point the weapon at anyone.

A probable cause affidavit says that the family had gone to sleep after getting the children inside, Law&Crime reported. Gonzalez’s mother, Ashley Rostro, said she heard someone open a window and then Rivera’s voice say “Yeah, what’s up, what’s up” before the gunfire.

According to KTRK, the gunfire went through the wall and into another apartment, where the bullet was stopped by a drum set.

A warrant for Rivera’s arrest charges him with capital murder.
