Son Conducting Welfare Check Finds Mom’s Body in Duffel Bag in Her Closet

An investigation is underway in New York after a woman was reportedly found slain in her apartment on Thursday.

According to WNBC, surveillance footage showed Nadia Vitel, 52, enter her Manhattan apartment on March 10 — the same day a man and woman, possibly in their 20s, were also seen going into her apartment. The pair was reportedly spotted leaving the building two days later, around the time a wellness check was performed for Vitel.

WNBC reported that New York City police and the building’s supervisor were with Vitel’s son when he discovered her body in a duffel bag in a closet near the unit’s entrance. Her personal items were reportedly discovered in the apartment building’s disposal area.

Jean Pompee, the building supervisor, told the Daily Mail that the wellness check was performed because Vitel’s family had not heard from her in days. He claimed Vitel’s dog had urinated in the apartment — where he observed signs of a struggle.

“They found a bag in the closet and said, ‘I believe there is a body in here.’ I kind of sensed something was wrong, it kind of looked suspicious,” Pompee said.

The medical examiner is investigating Vitel’s death. No arrests have been made.
