2 Dead, 7 Wounded in Shootout at Miami Nightclub

A security guard and a suspect were shot and killed early Saturday morning in a shooting at a bar inside a Miami mall.

According to WPLG, the security guard was killed after intervening in an argument between patrons at the Martini Bar at CityPlace Doral. Police officers, who were already nearby, responded to the scene and ultimately killed the gunman in a shootout.

Four men and two women were wounded in the crossfire, and one officer — the one who shot and killed the suspect — was shot in the leg. Doral Police Chief Edwin Lopez said that officer “applied a tourniquet on himself immediately after being struck.”

Investigators said a second officer also opened fire, but they don’t yet know whose bullets struck the six bystanders. One man and a woman were reported to be in critical condition, WTVJ said.

WSVN reported that patrons were fighting at the bar at about 3:30 a.m. and that the suspect pulled a gun when the security guard intervened.

Three agencies are investigating: City of Doral Police are investigating the bar fight; Miami-Dade Police are investigating the murder of the security guard; and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the officers’ involvement in the shooting.

The Martini Bar issued a statement after the incident saying the establishment was “completely shaken by this senseless act of violence.”

“We are conducting our own internal investigation, as well as cooperating fully with all authorities,” the company said, according to WTVJ. “This trauma will be felt deeply by us all for a long time to come, and we are here for our community today, and always.”
