Mississippi Firefighter Shot Dead by Live-in Girlfriend

A Mississippi firefighter was shot dead on Sunday in an apparent domestic dispute.

Jackson firefighters conducted a wellness check Sunday morning for Gerald “Buster” Bates, 49, who didn’t show up for his work shift, and found him dead. The woman he lived with, 41-year-old Tammie Williams, had barricaded herself inside, so they called Jackson police to the scene, WAPT reported.

Officers tried to negotiate Williams’ surrender for more than an hour as Williams reportedly walked around inside the house with a gun before calling in a SWAT team, Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said. The SWAT teams used tear gas and forced their way into the house, taking Williams into custody.

Police said an aggressive dog was killed during the incident.

Bates worked for both the Jackson and Byram Fire Departments, officials said.

Williams is expected in court on Monday. Court records show she is charged with murder.
