Texas Parents Charged in Deaths of 6-Week Old Twins

Texas parents have been charged in the connection with the death of their twin infants last fall.

Angelina Belinda Calderon and Fernando Vega, both 21, have been jailed on two counts each of serious bodily injury to a child, KTRK reported.

Houston Police were called to the home on October 4, 2023, after two 6-week-old babies were found unresponsive. Vega reported that he found the girls in their crib not breathing. Dispatchers gave him instructions on CPR, but the girls, who were born prematurely, did not survive.

Vega told investigators that the girls were “fussy” all night and that he put them in the bassinet, where they fell asleep. Calderon said she saw the twins the following morning but didn’t wake them since she was on her way to work.

Vega left the girls sleeping in their grandmother’s care while he took Calderon to work, finding the babies unresponsive when he got back home. according to KHOU.

Officers saw no visible signs of trauma initially. Investigators also learned that the twins had not received checkups since their release from the hospital after the premature birth. Calderon admitted the girls had been sick, but she said she did not seek medical care, KTRK said.

Court documents say that x-rays found the infants had multiple fractures, including to the thigh bone and ribs and the clavicle of one of the babies, according to KHOU. Doctors who conducted the autopsies said the injuries appeared to be a mix of new and old — or as old as they could be given the babies were six weeks old.

The rib fractures, they said, “were not consistent with chest compressions from CPR. Both children had similar rib fractures, and one had a frontal head fracture. Both babies were malnourished and dehydrated.

The autopsies ruled that the babies died from multiple blunt force traumas and that both had brain injuries.

Calderon and Vega were arrested on Friday. They have a court appearance on Monday.
