WATCH LIVE: Trial Underway for College Instructor ‘Sweetheart’ Charged With Mowing Down Cop Boyfriend

The trial for Karen Read, a Massachusetts woman accused of reversing her SUV into her boyfriend in January 2022, following a night of excessive drinking, began Monday.

According to The Boston Globe, victim John O’Keefe’s brother, Paul, took the stand first Monday morning to testify, following opening statements by prosecutor Adam Lally and defense lawyer David Yannetti.

Read has entered a plea of not guilty to charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter while driving under the influence of alcohol, and leaving the scene of injury or death.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, a Norfolk County grand jury indicted Read in 2022 on murder, motor vehicle manslaughter, and leaving the scene of a collision causing death charges. She’s accused of killing her boyfriend, O’Keefe, a Boston police officer.

At the end of his opening statement, Yannetti reiterated that his client had been “set up, and the evidence supports this,” adding that prosecutors “will not succeed in proving this case beyond a reasonable doubt.”
