A 10-year-old Florida girl died early Wednesday after she was struck in the head by “celebratory” gunfire during New Year’s celebrations.
Miami-Dade Police said Yanelis Munuguia was outside with her family at about 1:30 a.m., sending off legal fireworks, WPLG reported. Her family saw the little girl, who had just turned 10, collapse and found a a gunshot to her head.
The family began driving to find a hospital and called 911, eventually meeating Hialiah Fire Rescue , who rushed her to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. The girl died there.
Investigators said the bullet that struck was “fired into the air from an unknown location by an unknown subject.”
“We say time and time again, every New Year’s, that what goes up must come down. This is a prime example of the dangers of shooting a firearm into the air,” said Miami-Dade Police Detective Andre Martin.
