A Louisiana babysitter has been charged with murder in the death of a 3-month old boy who was in her care for three hours last month.
The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office said that Shirley L. Sawyer, 40, took care of Kairo Anderson on January 22, but when the boy’s mother arrived to pick him up, she thought he was sleeping but soon discovered he was limp and unconscious.
The mother brought the boy to the hospital, and he was airlifted to another facility but died the next morning.
Police said they were called to the first hospital after personnel said the child’s injuries were consistent with trauma.
Sawyer was arrested this week and charged with first degree murder. An autopsy determined the baby boy died of a brain bleed and multiple skull fractures.
“I’ve been knowing this girl [Sawyer] for a minute and I couldn’t believe it,” Kairo’s mother, Symone Anderson, told KPLC. “Like, you smiled in my face and you killed my baby behind my back.”
Sawyer is being held on a $2.5 million bond.
