Baby Boy Dies After He’s Found Upside Down in Trash Can, Mom Arrested 10 Months Later

An Iowa woman has been charged with the death of her infant son, who was found head first in a trash can in January.

The baby died a week later, WGEM reported.

A criminal complaint says that Jaley D. Bush, 28, was visiting a friend and fell asleep on his bed on the morning of January 27. The baby was reportedly on the bed beside her. She told responding officers that she found the boy in the trash can — on her side of the bed — when she woke up, surmising that the baby had crawled over or around her and fallen in while she was asleep.

Bush “failed to provide the minimum supervision required of her to ensure the safety of her infant son, resulting in his death,” the complaint says, according to KHQA.

Officers said Bush showed signs of being under the influence of drugs when they arrived. She told them that she had taken Klonopin, a benzodiazipine anti-anxiety drug, before falling asleep, saying she didn’t know who the drugs belonged to, WGEM said. A blood test found both benzodiazipine and methamphetamine in her system.

The baby died on February 5 from asphyxia, the complaint said. Bush has been charged with child endangerment resulting in death.
