A repeat child sex abuser and register sex offender now faces a witness tampering charge after he allegedly smuggled a letter out of jail in October urging his latest victim to stop cooperating with law enforcement.
Matthew “Nate” Boegel, 27, was arrested in October on charges of felony sexual abuse of minors and violating conditions of his previous release after two earlier convictions on child sex charges, The Maine Wire reported.
This week, Rockland, Maine, police learned that he wrote a letter to his latest victim and sent it to another inmate, who was scheduled to be released, asking him to deliver it to his vicim.
Police quickly investigated and added witness tampering to Boegel’s charges.
Boegel was previously convicted of raping two girls, 12 and 13, when he was 18, but he only served nine months in jail. Not long afterward, while on probation, he was convicted of abusing girls between the ages or 14 and 16 and providing them with marijuana.
He is on Maine’s sex offender registry and again violated the terms of his release when he was picked up in October.
