Brown University Shooting & MIT Professor’s Murder Are Possibly Linked: Report

Authorities are reportedly investigating a possible link between last week’s deadly mass shooting at Brown University and this week’s shooting that killed a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor.

Two unidentified sources who are close to the investigation told the Associated Press that a person of interest in the two shootings has been identified and is currently being sought. Saturday’s shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island — which killed two students and wounded nine — occurred 50 miles from the Boston, Massachusetts, home where MIT professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro, 47, was fatally shot on Monday.

Loureiro died from his injuries on Tuesday. Neighbors told WCVB that they heard gunshots the night before.

It is unclear what preceded the shooting. Police have not publicly identified a person of interest, though a homicide investigation is ongoing.

According to the Associated Press, the FBI previously denied knowing about any links between the two incidents.

Saturday’s shooting occurred in the older part of the college’s engineering building, which reportedly lacked cameras. The masked shooter is believed to have entered that building via a residential street, also possibly explaining why there are no clear pictures of the suspect.

Meanwhile, officials have asked residents to review their security and phone footage, as they believe the shooter may have been in the area a week before the deadly mass shooting.
