Alabama authorities said on Thursday that the deaths of a Mississippi woman and her 3-year-old daughter, whose bodies were found in Alabama, were a case of murder-suicide.
Shardee McGill, 32, and Janae McGill vanished from Jackson, Mississippi, on September 21, two days before her unoccupied car was discovered near the Tombigbee River in Alabama. WBRC reported that Shardee McGill’s body was discovered in the river on September 25, and her daughter’s was found there the following day.
Shardee McGill’s husband reported them missing a day after they were last seen. Jackson police said the husband was detained and questioned but was released early on in their investigation, according to the Clarion Ledger.
Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Sergeant Reginal King said Shardee and Janae McGill’s deaths were ruled drownings — with the toddler’s death being ruled a homicide. Shardee McGill’s death was ruled a suicide, according to AL.com.
“Over the course of the investigation, the determination has been made that there are no additional suspects involved,” King said.
Despite this determination, an investigation is ongoing. The Clarion Ledger reported that police’s findings will be presented to prosecutors for review.
