An Idaho man reportedly claimed self-defense when he killed his 69-year-old grandfather with a hatchet.
Jeremiah Kiley, 29, called 911 himself on Tuesday, a day after he bludgeoned Joseph Reyes to death, the Bonner County Daily Bee reported.
Kiley has been charged with second degree murder.
According to court documents, Kiley called 911 and said that Reyes had been “acting crazy,” causing him to hit the older man in the head with the axe in self defense.
Kiley said that Reyes pointed a gun at him the night before during a “schizophrenic episode” and that he feared Reyes would find more guns he had hidden throughout the house they shared, so he attacked his grandfather to “stop his suffering.”
The affidavit said that Kiley’s behavior alternated between calm and aggressive during his interview with investigations.
According to Law&Crime, Kiley is being held on a $1 million bond and is due in court again on January 21.
