Police in California have arrested a man for the 2001 murder of a Victorville woman who disappeared from her job at a Mervyn’s retail store and was found dead two days later.
Raymond Gonzales, 51, has been charged with murder of Suzanne Sites-Fenton on April 14, 2001, the San Bernadino County Sheriff’s Department said.
Suzanne Sites-Fenton’s husband reported her missing on April 14, 2001, when she failed to return home after her work shift. Her vehicle was found abandoned the following day with “evidence of a physical altercation” inside, the sheriff’s department said.
Sites-Fenton’s body was found on April 16 in a desolate hear in Hesperia. An autopsy determined she had been shot, and police said she was kidnapped and raped prior to her death.
Investigators determined that she had taken a break from work and walked from the store into the parking lot but never returned.
Authorities did not say what led them to the suspect or whether he and his victim knew one another before the rape and murder.
Gonzales was arrested on Thursday and is beng held at the High Desert Detention Center without bond.
He is due in court on January 20, the Victorville Daily Press reported.
