Chemical Plant Worker Dies in 6,000-Gallon Vat of Mineral Oil

An investigation is underway in New Jersey after a subcontractor was found dead in a large container of mineral oil on Monday.

According to NJ.com, the 71-year-old worker was discovered in the container at the Bayway Chemical Plant in Linden. Investigators believe the man was working on top of the container when he fell in.

The container was being filled with mineral oil at the time of Monday’s incident. Linden and Bayway Fire officials retrieved the man from the vat, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The subcontractor has not been publicly identified, but police said he was from Iselin.

Both OSHA and the police are investigating the man’s death.
